Navigating a new country can be challenging, especially when it comes to finding psychological support.

Below, I've outlined some essential information to help you as you settle in. This guide aims to provide you with a clear pathway through the psychological support services available in Denmark. If you have any further questions or need more personalized guidance, please don't hesitate to reach out

Publicly Supported Psychotherapy for Adults

If you have a referral from your general practitioner, you can access psychotherapy at a reduced cost, typically around 400 DKK per session, under the Sygeforsikringen "Danmark" health insurance plan.

Permanent Free Psychological Treatment for Young Adults

A successful pilot program offering free psychological treatment for 18 to 24-year-olds with anxiety and depression has been made permanent. Access to this service requires a referral from your general practitioner.

Psychological Help for Children Under 18

Children and teenagers under 18 are entitled to psychological support under a specific practice agreement, although it does not include treatments for anxiety and depression. A general practitioner's referral is required to access these services.

Understanding Waiting Times for Therapy

The availability of publicly supported psychotherapy is controlled through a quota system, which limits the number of psychologists who can offer publicly funded services and the number of patients they can see. This often results in long waiting times, especially for depression and anxiety treatments. You may find shorter waiting lists in rural areas, and it might be beneficial to expand your search to these areas. For detailed waiting times, consult www.sundhed.dk.

Please be aware that I am not part of the public service agreement, so I am unable to provide the public discount.

Sygeforsikringen "Danmark"

Sygeforsikringen "Danmark," a private health insurance cooperative, offers partial coverage for psychotherapy costs. This coverage is available whether or not you have a general practitioner's referral, provided the sessions are with an authorized psychologist. More detailed information is available in English.

Acute Psychiatric Care

In urgent cases, the psychiatric emergency room ("Psykiatrisk Skadestue") is accessible as part of the hospital system. Before visiting, you should consult your general practitioner or contact the on-call doctor service ("Lægevagten") at +45 70113131 for a referral, particularly during out-of-office hours.
